Microsoft manager hints at music subscription plans
15 June 2005
Microsoft has suggested that it might expand its MSN Music service to include a subscription option.
Stocks in MSN Music rivals dipped after one of the company's managers suggested that it was looking into setting up a subscription-based online music service.
"We are actively investigating the subscription model, but we don't have anything to share today," Christine Andrews, lead product manager of Microsoft's MSN Internet division, told Reuters. "Once we are ready to talk more, we'll let you know."
Ms Andrews confirmed a report on technology news website CNet. MSN Music has been offering a one-time, buy one song get five free, offer for several days.
Online music is becoming an increasingly lucrative market and many of the big internet players are keen to tap into the potential revenues it can generate.
