Councils urged to blog
25 February 2005
Local councils are being told to get online and keep internet journals, or blogs, to bring local people together.
According to the local e-Democracy National e-Government Project, councillors and other officials within local authorities should be regularly logging on and writing down what is going on in the community and record their thoughts and feelings on local topics so as to bring local government closer to the people.
That is one of the main aims of e-government, intending to bring local government to the community, and thereby get local people interested in government and more involved in the community around them.
So-called civic blogging already occurs in the US, where it has already proved to offer an engaging way to inform and educate citizens on local issues and government services.
A pilot in the US state of Minnesota has resulted in more interest from local people and an improvement in public involvement, and that development has prompted the UK's e-government group to urge local authorities to set up similar schemes.
