AOL goes local
24 February 2005
America Online is preparing to launch its new online Yellow Pages service.
The internet division of media giant Time Warner is looking to reassert itself in the online search market and is preparing to launch its new website to provide its US users with local search facilities.
Should the project prove successful and see AOL make money from increased advertising revenue, while taking a chunk out of search giants such as Yahoo! and Google, it is likely that the new website will be launched around the world.
Enabling users to review past queries and personalise search results to their own locality, the new offering is also designed to bring together in one place AOL's various existing local services, such as Mapquest, Moviephone (providing local film information) and City Guides (which offer reviews of neighbourhood businesses).
The Kelsey Group believes that the local search marketing industry will be worth $3.4 billion within the next four years, and AOL is keen to make sure it is well-positioned to gain its slice of that market.
