Government launches net alert service
24 February 2005
A rapid alerting service that tells home computer users about serious internet security problems is being launched by the government.
The government has launched a new website updating web users to the latest virus epidemic.
The free service - IT Safe - provides information on viruses and vulnerabilities in software and internet-primed mobile phones.
Home users and small businesses can sign up to the service and receive alerts either by email or text message.
The government expects to issue security alerts about six to ten times a year.
Home office minister Hazel Blears said there was a "clear need" for straightforward, independent advice, free of unwieldy jargon.
"The purpose of this new government service is to ensure computer users are aware of the risks involved and how to deal with them easily and effectively without causing alarm," she said.
Although the government does not intend to disseminate software patches or updates from the site, it will advise on the best place to download patches from security firms.
Over 13 million Britons have access to the internet, according to the government.
