Gmail approaches launch date
18 February 2005
Search engine Google has announced that it is almost ready to fully launch its email service, Gmail, moving on from the 'beta' development stage.
Up until now the firm has been inviting customers who are interested in the service to open a free e-mail account. Once registered people can then send out invites to up to 50 others to join up. However, with the service still under development Google has been reluctant to talk about when it would officially launch Gmail.
"We are excited to send invitations to those who supported us during the launch," the company said in a statement. "This round of invitations does not mean we are out of beta or offering an open subscription to the world.
"We still have no details to share on when we will take Gmail out of beta."
Google is able to offer users 1,000 megabytes (Mb) of storage, a considerable increase on Yahoo! and Hotmail's 250Mb. Gmail also offers a search engine for the user's emails, effectively removing the need to file messages away in appropriate folders.
Subsequently, rivals have been increasing free storage space and search facilities in order to keep up with the new Gmail product.
