UN addresses Internet governance
23 February 2005
A panel sponsored by the UN will be looking to resolve ongoing conflicts for governance of the Internet, once control is relinquished by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
The panel, originally established in December 2003, will establish foundations for a final decision to be taken over the issue this November, at a UN-sponsored World Summit on the Information Society.
In the recent past calls for an international Internet governing body have increased, coming largely from developing nations beginning to extend greater claims on the Internet with regards to commercial activity. In addition, many believe that control of the Internet should be in the hands of an international collaborative body, arguing that such a group is less likely to have any sort of bias.
The International Telecommunication Union has emerged as a popular choice among some nations.
Incorporated in 1998, ICANN oversees management of the Internet's addressing system which matches numerical addresses to familiar website addresses, and since then has attracted criticism that it may be subject to US influence.
"There is an issue that is out there that needs to be resolved," said Nitin Desai, chairman of working group and special adviser to UN secretary-general Kofi Annan, according to Reuters. It has been announced that the UN panel will, in addition to settling the row over Internet governance, propose solutions to problems such as cyber crime and email spam.
