BBC reports record year for web search queries
10 January 2005
The BBC has revealed that its online search engine was used a record amount in 2004.
According to BBC News Online, more than 45 million people used the search engine, trying to find answers to more than 277 million enquiries. The site was used 34 per cent more often than in 2003, with 44 per cent more users now accessing the site than 12 months ago.
The corporation reports that the queries included both the simple and the strange, with the most requested search terms of 2004 including EastEnders, CBBC, John Peel, Harry Potter and Olympics.
Out of the ordinary enquiries included questions such as: what is a dog?, How to fold a serviette like an elf's boot?, how do you say basketball? What is the name of James Martin's dog? What is so special about the Swiss? and what is the biggest collection of naval fluff?
The BBC search engine helps users track down BBC and external web pages which answer queries or locates a relevant website.
