Blog and RSS popularity soars
4 January 2005
Blog readership leapt by a massive 58 per cent during 2004, a new survey claims.
However, research conducted by the Pew Internet and American Life Project also found that 62 per cent of internet users still do not know what a blog is.
Just seven per cent of the 120 million US adult internet users created a blog in 2004, while 32 million Americans became blog readers during the year, with some of the growth in interest generated by political blogs written and read during the US presidential campaign. 12 per cent of web users said they had posted material or comments on other people's blogs.
Blogs, or web logs, are online journals in which people can publish their thoughts, opinions or highlight news events. Companies like Google and Microsoft provide users with the tools to publish their own blogs.
Last year also saw a sharp rise in the use of RSS aggregators, which are downloaded to PCs and are programmed to subscribe to feeds from blogs, news sites and other websites, according to "The state of blogging" report.
Pew Internet and American Life Project estimates that six million Americans now use RSS aggregators.
