UK broadband use soars
21 December 2004
One person in the UK is signing up to high-speed internet services every 10 seconds, according to a new report.
Telecoms giant BT claims that the number of people connected to broadband via the telephone line had now surpassed four million, with a total of six million using high-speed internet, including those connected via cable.
The last million connections were made over the past four months, with thousands of new subscribers every week. There are an estimated 1.7 million cable broadband customers in the UK.
BT claims that the boom in broadband services has been fuelled by fierce competition and falling prices and greater availability of telephone services.
"The take-up rate for broadband is accelerating at a terrific pace," said BT's chief executive, Ben Verwaayen. "We will be in a very strong position to hit our five million target by summer 2006 much earlier than we had previously expected."
BT aims to increase the 95 per cent of UK homes currently able to connect to broadband services via telephone lines to 99.4 per cent by mid-2006.
