UK internet provider unveils 8Mb broadband service
16 November 2004
UK Online has launched a new broadband service, offering a whopping 8Mbps connection speed.
The new Broadband 8000 service is 120 times faster than dial-up and 16 times faster than the average broadband package.
Broadband 8000, which will initially only be available in metropolitan areas, costs £39.99 a month, with a one-off connection fee of £50. A wireless Ethernet router costs £69.99.
UK Online hopes the new service will pave the way for video-on-demand and broadband TV. The service includes WiFi as standard, meaning users can connect multiple PCs, laptops and game consoles from any room in the house.
Other operators are now able to use BT's telephone exchanges and network provider EasyNet has installed its own DSL equipment at 230 exchanges. UK Online expects the Broadband 8000 service to be available to 4.4 million households by the start of next year.
Chris Stening, UK Online general manager, said: "We're really excited by this. The service is phenomenally quick and is likely to suit those that share their broadband connection. It makes streaming video look like TV."
