Mozilla releases Firefox 1.0
10 November 2004
The long-awaited first full version of the Firefox web browser has been launched.
Fans of the software have banded together to raise cash to pay for an advert in the New York Times announcing that version 1.0 of the browser is available from November 9th.
Firefox, created by the Mozilla Foundation, has been gaining fans and winning people away from Microsoft's Internet Explorer browser.
The Mozilla foundation, an open source organisation, was started by former browser maker Netscape in 1998 and several early versions of Firefox have been released since February when the browser made its first appearance.
According to internet monitoring firm WebSideStory, before July this year Internet Explorer was used by about 95 per cent of web surfers, but the number of IE users dropped in July to 94.7 per cent and by the end of October stood at 92.9 per cent.
Firefox is seen as having fewer security holes than its rival, allows the pages of different websites to be arranged as tabs so users can switch easily between them, blocks pop-ups, and enables users to search through pages they have browsed.
Firefox 1.0 is available in 12 languages for Microsoft's Windows, Apple Computer's Mac OS X, and Linux, and can be obtained through Mozilla's website as a free download or in CD format with a user's manual for $14.95.
