BT reports UK broadband boom
5 November 2004
More people in Britain have signed up for broadband in the last three months than in any other quarter, according to BT.
The telecoms giant reports that 600,000 new connections were made over the three months to September 30th, taking the total number of people in the UK signing up for broadband from BT to almost 3.3 million, up from 2.7 million at end-June.
BT said in a statement that its retail arm accounted for 30 per cent of these net additions, up from 29 per cent in the preceding quarter. BT Retail's installed base of broadband connections rose to 1.28 million customers at the end of September, up from 1.10 million at the end of June.
Part of the surge in people signing up was due to BT expanding the reach of ADSL beyond 6km.
"This breakthrough led to a dramatic increase in orders as we were suddenly able to satisfy the pent-up demand that existed in many areas," said Paul Reynolds, chief executive of BT Wholesale, which provides the infrastructure for more than 100 internet access providers.
Last week, regulator Ofcom reported solid progress in broadband penetration, saying the country had overtaken Germany. The UK now has 7.5 connections per 100 people, ahead of Germany's 6.7, but behind France's 8.3 connections and the Netherlands 15.8.
An estimated five million people in the UK now browse the internet via broadband.
