Napster unveils pre-paid music cards
15 October 2004
Music download service Napster has announced that it is launching new pre-paid digital music cards through the Dixons Group.
The company is targeting the new cards at teenagers and other music fans who do not have credit cards but want to access music downloads.
Leanne Sharman, who runs Napster in the UK, said: "We want this to take online music offline, and make it more accessible. It provides the under-18s with a way of easily buying music, which they did not have before."
The Napster pre-paid cards carry a unique code, which can be redeemed against subscriptions or track purchases and are available now in Dixons. The cards, similar to those used to top-up mobile phones, are also due to go on sale in PC World, The Link and Currys from November.
Napster was originally closed down by a judge in 2000 as an illegal download site, but has since relaunched as a legal music service and now has over one million tracks in its archive.
The pre-paid cards start at £14.85 for 15 songs, £56.95 and £25.95 for a 3-month subscription.
Rival firms, such as Apple's iTunes or OD2, which supplies MTV, Virgin, HMV and MSN, do not currently offer pre-pay cards, though some do offer gift vouchers and top-up accounts. OD2 is planning to launch pre-paid cards in the near future.
