UK music industry plans to sue internet pirates
7 October 2004
The British music industry has announced that it is planning to launch a first wave of legal action against illegal music downloads.
The British Phonographic Industry (BPI), the UK record industry's trade association, is set to announce that it is taking legal action against illegal internet file-sharers for the first time today. The BPI is joining forces with the International Federation of Phonographic Industries (IFPI) to develop new measures to tackle the problem in the UK.
The organisations will unveil plans to target "major uploaders", people making their music collection available illegally on the internet for other web users to share.
Illegal file-sharing has been blamed for a global decline in sales of CDs and the BPI's decision follows similar lawsuits against file-swappers launched by the US Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). More than 3,000 people in the United States have faced legal action over the past couple if years and many have opted to settle out of court.
The BPI stated in March that it would take legal action against users of peer-to-peer music services and has since sent thousands of internet messages to desktops warning people that song-swapping sites were being watched.
The UK record industry recently announced that both CDs and singles sales are starting to recover following years of decline. The BPI says a raft of quality legal download sites have been established in recent months for internet users, such as Apple's iTunes and Napster.
