UK broadband take-up tops five million
29 September 2004
The UK now has 5 million broadband subscribers, or 20 per cent of British households, according to a new survey.
The Telecom Markets' Broadband Subscriber Database predicts that the figure will rise to eight million by the end of 2005, or 32 per cent of UK homes.
The database shows that out of more than three million DSL subscribers about 40 per cent subscribe to BT directly, while the majority subscribe to a service offered by ISPs that currently buy DSL services from BT. Around 50,000 new broadband subscribers are being added every week.
The UK is now catching up with the rest of Europe in ensuring that as many people as possible have access to broadband.
Analyst Gareth Willmer predicted: "In the next year or so subscriptions will rise rapidly owing to falling prices, VoIP launches and increasing competition from alternative broadband carriers. Falling prices of unbundling could be a key driver of an increase in UK broadband subscriber numbers, as has been seen in France."
