Wal-Mart enters online music market
3 September 2004
Retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc has launched an online music store that works with Microsoft's Windows Media Player.
The new online music store charges 88 cents per song and delivers an easy-to-use service for customers to shop, download and enjoy music all within one application on their PCs.
The new service is now available to music fans in the United States at www.walmart.com/musicdownloads and can also be accessed directly within Windows Media Player 9 Series.
Customers can still purchase and download music directly from Walmart.com using the existing music downloads service that was launched in March.
Wal-Mart Music Downloads has expanded its catalogue since its launch and features exclusive music by both top artists and new artists.
"Our new online music store combines the simplicity and convenience of a full-featured music player with Wal-Mart's everyday low price of 88 cents per song," said Kevin Swint, Walmart.com's director of entertainment categories. "Customer response to our existing music downloads service continues to be extremely positive, and we're very pleased to offer this exciting new way for customers to shop and enjoy music."
Microsoft launched its own music download service, MSN Music, on Wednesday, in direct competition with Apple's popular iTunes service.
