MSN launches online music store
2 September 2004
Microsoft has launched a preview version of its own music-downloading service.
MSN Music service allows users to legally download songs for 99 cents (55p) and whole albums will be made available for $9.99.
Microsoft said about 500,000 songs will be initially available, with more added on a weekly basis.
The new service aims to rival the success of Apple's iTunes and other providers. It is not yet available outside the United States and Microsoft has yet to announce worldwide release dates.
Microsoft expects to launch the full version of MSN Music later in the autumn.
Users will be able to access the service through the MSN website and the latest version of its Windows Music Player.
MSN vice president Yusuf Mehdi said: "[We are] offering what we believe is the largest and highest quality catalogue of legal music on the internet, available on the broadest selection of portable devices."
