VeriSign claim fails
31 August 2004
A US court has dismissed VeriSign's anti-trust complaint against the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN).
Judge A. Howard Matz of the District Court in Central California said that VeriSign's claim that ICANN's board was dominated by VeriSign competitors.
VeriSign, who control the master list of domain name suffixes, such as ".com" and ".net.", found themselves in breach of ICANN's rules when they launched their Site Finder service for guiding internet users who mistype ".com" or ".net" addresses.
Instead of receiving a standard error messages, users would view a page listing suggestions on where they might have wanted to go. However, ICANN claimed that because VeriSign was receiving money for directing traffic to some of those sites it was profiting from a public resource.
VeriSign eventually agreed to suspend the service but then counter-sued ICANN over Site Finder and alleged unnecessary delays and conditions.
The company insists that it will continue legal action against ICANN despite the latest ruling.
