Linux boost for Google
27 August 2004
Developers are working on a Google style search engine for Linux desktops and are hopefully the software will be available in the next 18 months.
KDE are planning to simplify searching for files on the desktop by using techniques currently used by the world's largest search engine Google.
Aaron Seigo, a KDE developer, said: "We are planning a Google-like search system for the control panel, although people will still be able to search for files by name."
He added: "Developers love to build an interface with a million levers and buttons, but it's not easy to use. We want to make the interface more intuitive without limiting power."
Microsoft is also planning to implement a Google-style approach to their next operating system, Longhorn, which is scheduled for release in 2007.
However, there are doubts whether even a revised Linux desktop will be able to compete with the current usability of the Microsoft Windows desktop.
