Google opens up AdSense to Bloggers
26 August 2004
Google has announced that Bloggers will now be able to display AdSense ads within their personal blog space.
Google employee Biz Stone of Blogger.com first announced the new feature "Get Paid For Blogging" on his personal Blog.
However, he stressed that the new feature will not be restricted solely to Blogger members, writing: "Please note that this program is optional and that it is not required for you to have a Blogger powered blog - all bloggers are invited."
Announcing the changes to AdSense provision, Mr Stone wrote: "We were making money from those ads but you weren't getting any of it. Now, we're inviting you to set up your own Bloggerized AdSense account so that you make the money. What's the catch? We're going to take some of the action. Based on what we have learned from AdSense so far, this will work out very nicely for both of us. Please note that this program is optional and that it is not required for you to have a Blogger powered blog-all bloggers are invited."
The Google employee explained that putting ads on a Blog is similar to "adding a hit counter, a quiz, a guestbook or any other blog add-on". Bloggers simply sign up for an AdSense account, customise ads, copy some HTML code, and paste that code into their template. They will then receive an AdSense account which will tell them how much money they are making.
Mr Stone also warned Bloggers not to cheat the system by clicking on their own ads or getting friends to do so, drawing unnecessary attention to ads, sharing how much they have earned or "fiddling" with the AdSense code.
