AOL unveils upgraded Netscape
18 August 2004
America Online has announced that Netscape Communications has upgraded its browser to version 7.2, its first upgrade in more than a year.
AOL said the upgrade, based on Mozilla 1.7, contained 'mostly security fixes with some slightly enhanced functionality' and now features better pop-up blocking, vCard support, an improved junk mail algorithm, better standards support, performance enhancements and several hundred other security patches.
The new browser also has controls for editing tables in the Composer HTML editor, a new Windows plug-in for Macromedia's Flash 7 animation software, faster loading of the browser and of webpages, and improvements in standards support.
It is a little over a year since AOL shut down the Netscape browser division and withdrew from the day to day running of mozilla.org. Open-source group Mozilla's own Firefox browser has gained fans and investors in recent months.
More details about and download links for Netscape 7.2 are available at Netscape Browser Central, or by mail on compact disc.
