Vietnam introduces cyber cops
6 August 2004
The Vietnamese government has set up a special police unit to combat cyber crime, in a bid to gain greater control over its growing number of internet users.
The communist nation has already curbed access to the internet, banned sites and routinely monitors emails.
The new unit, due to start next month, will police banned materials online and block sites deemed inappropriate, according to state media. It will be under the control of the Ministry of Public Security and will focus on crimes such as credit card fraud, hacking, gambling and posting banned information online, the Vietnam News reports.
Hanoi made the announcement as it battles against international condemnation of the imprisonment of several political dissidents who used the internet to criticise the government.
Nguyen Tu Quang, director of Hanoi's Technology University Network Security Center insisted that the unit would mainly focus on financial abuses, though it would also take action against people posting anti-communist messages.
An estimated two million of Vietnam's 81 million population are online and the figure is rising rapidly, helped by the spread of cheap internet cafes.
Neighbouring communist China also announced recently that intends to crack down on the freedom of the internet.
