AOL purchases Mailblocks
5 August 2004
America Online has announced that it has acquired Mailblocks, a personal web-based email service.
Mailblocks is known for its development of "challenge/response" technology, designed to fight unwanted junk email generated by machines and authenticate legitimate email senders.
Time Warner subsidiary AOL described its purchase of the privately-held anti-spam software firm for an undisclosed sum as its latest effort to battle spam on behalf of its users.
AOL director of email products Roy Ben-Yoseph said: "We are thrilled to welcome Mailblocks and its energetic, talented team of innovators to our company. Our members will be thrilled with the many attributes of Mailblocks' award-winning, cutting-edge email technology. We expect these enhancements to offer AOL members the ability to further reduce spam in their email inbox, building on the improvements we've already delivered to members this year."
AOL members and users of AOL Network services will gain access to Mailblocks technology via a series of phased, convenient upgrades. AOL also intends to completely redesign the web-based email systems offered on both its AOL and its Netscape sites, adopting Mailblocks' user interface.
Earlier this year, the AOL reported that it had blocked more than one billion virus-infected emails since launching a screening program in April 2003.
