Microsoft reveals personalised search plans

3 August 2004

Software giant Microsoft has revealed that it plans to base search results on users' individual preferences and interests.

The company intends to customise its new search technology, making its results more relevant than current offerings.

"We're going to make search extremely personal," Microsoft chairman Bill Gates told an audience of computer science and technology researchers.

Speaking at the software giant's headquarters in Redmond, California, Mr Gates said users would have to provide private information to get personalised search results.

He explained that the search technology would build a database of what users were interested in and adjust searches accordingly.

The personalised aspect of the Microsoft search engine is likely to concern international privacy groups, as hackers could theoretically find a way to access the data.

Last week, the firm announced that its new search engine would also be capable of hunting for data on hard drives. Microsoft is attempting to leak small amounts of information at a time, in a bid to generate public interest during the run-up to the launch of its own search technology.
