Telstra to unveil Sensis search engine
12 July 2004
Telstra Corp is due to launch its new Sensis search engine tomorrow.
The new search service will look for websites, but also incorporates Teltra's White and Yellow Pages listings and its online site Whereis and CitySearch.
Analysts believe the search engine is an attempt to prevent advertisers switching from Sensis to rivals such as Google or Yahoo.
"Sensis have decided that search engines may be taking up some of the Yellow Pages functions, basically eating into the traditional directories area. They need to meet that head on," Credit Suisse First Boston analyst Guy Hallwright told AAP.
"People are just getting used to using search engines to look for things. It's as simple as that."
A test version of the search engine site has been online for weeks at www.sensis.com.au and has now gone live, although with only "partial functionality", Sensis has announced.
Sensis has embarked on a multi-million dollar advertising campaign in recent weeks to raise awareness of its new site and has also launched an operator-assisted voice service under the phone number 1234.
