South Korea blocks 'beheading' search facility
24 June 2004
The South Korean government has ordered internet service providers to block websites carrying footage of a hostage killed in Iraq.
The 33-year-old South Korean was kidnapped several weeks ago, reportedly by Iraqi militants.
The South Korean ministry of information and communication has asked major internet service companies to block access to websites that were found carrying the video footage and has warned web users that those who continue to try and spread the online footage will be prosecuted.
"On the night of June 23rd the ministry already shut down a local website showing images of the killing," ministry official Kim Ki-kwon said. "The ministry ordered Internet service providers to shut down three other websites by noon."
The ministry has also requested that internet portals prevent users from conducting searches featuring keywords such as "execution" and "beheading".
The body of Kim Sun-il, a translator for Cana General Trading Corp, a South Korean supplier for the US military in Iraq, was found on Tuesday night after Seoul rejected the kidnappers' demands to keep its troops out of Iraq.
