Microsoft and OD2 unveil online music store
14 June 2004
IT giant Microsoft has teamed up with UK-based download service OD2 to launch a new music downloads store in Britain.
Windows Media Player users will be able to buy music downloads from a selection of European online stores using the new service, "SonicSelector".
The online jukebox, designed to lure fans away from iTunes, was developed by OD2 and unveiled at a press conference in London.
Music fans can now download the SonicSelector software for free. The programme is an upgrade to Windows Media Player, enabling users to browse select OD2-powered online music stores for tracks.
SonicSelector carries a song-recommendation engine and sells a catalogue of 350,000 tracks for 75 pence or 0.99 euro per track.
OD2 and Microsoft are now braced for the forthcoming arrival of the iTunes internet music store in Europe. Apple is reportedly hosting a press conference on Tuesday in London and is rumoured to be planning to announce the European launch date for iTunes.
OD2 has dominated the small European download market until recent weeks, when Roxio launched Napster in the UK and Sony revealed plans for the rollout later this month of its Sony Connect online music store.
