BT cracks down on child pornography
14 June 2004
British Telecom has opted to block all illegal child pornography websites in a crackdown on abuse online.
The UK telecoms carrier's decision reportedly has the personal backing of BT chairman Sir Christopher Bland, following intense pressure from children's charities.
BT's web censorship, previously thought to be at the limits of technical possibilities of the internet and prohibitively expensive, is expected to spark a raft of similar schemes by other internet service providers (ISPs).
Known as Cleanfeed, the project has been developed in consultation with the Home Office and will go live by the end of June. The project, agreed at a board meeting last month, could lead to the first mass censorship of the web attempted in a Western democracy.
Cleanfeed will deliver an error message as if the page was unavailable if subscribers to BT's internet services such as BTYahoo and BTInternet attempt to access illegal sites.
Other major players in the internet market, such as Energis and Thus, which owns rival Demon Internet, are said to be preparing to block child pornography sites.
