Google considering RSS support alongside Atom
10 June 2004
Google is reportedly thinking about supporting RSS in addition to Atom.
According to CNET News.com, an internal memo from the company revealed that the search giant was looking into the technical details around supporting the RSS web publishing format.
Google dropped RSS support from its Blogger publishing tool in April in an effort to boost Atom, but both standards seem to have grown in popularity since the decision, with RSS holding a slight lead over Atom.
RSS, or Really Simple Syndication, lets online publishers automatically send web content to subscribers
"I did ask (a Google product manager) to develop a summary about RSS feeds, including the ways they are produced and consumed, which platforms/devices they run on, and information on the various formats (RSS 1.0, 2.0, Atom)," Jonathan Rosenberg, Google's vice president of product management, wrote on May 22nd.
Atom launched as a challenger last year, created by critics of RSS.
