Google hints at mobile compatibility for Gmail
2 June 2004
Google's forthcoming free email service, Gmail, will reportedly be available via mobile phone when it launches fully.
Gmail is currently at the beta testing stage and has been the focus of widespread speculation amongst the online community.
According to WebProNews, bloggers at endgadget.com asked about Gmail's service being available to mobile phones and PDAs and Google answered them by revealing that Gmail will offer new features, including automatic forwarding of email to another account, a plain HTML version of Gmail and an import/export contacts facility.
Automatic forwarding would allow Gmail users to have incoming Gmail mailings forwarded to their phones and/or PDAs.
Endgadget.com, which covers high tech gadgets, responded to the Google statement saying: "Very cool! We're looking forward to forwarding/notifying our cellphones via SMS when we have new Gmail and since there will be plain HTML, that means access on all/most of our devices. If Google does this right, Gmail might be the best email solution for mobile devices (and you get a gig of storage)."
Gmail has also been the subject of widespread concern among privacy campaigners, who are concerned that the search giant's decision to scan all emails in order to create advertising links will compromise users' security.
