Google upgrades Intranet package

2 June 2004

Search giant Google has improved its search appliance for companies, schools and government departments to sift through their own internal networks.

The world's largest search engine upgraded its business package as part of a concerted effort to become less reliant on online advertising for revenues. The new upgrade is the most extensive overhaul of the two-year-old system and the search appliance is now able to store information on 1.5 million documents, around five times its previous capacity.

Dave Girouard, general manager of Google's enterprise business, announced that the new search appliance, which will be available from $32,000, is also designed to find information five times faster than its previous incarnation. The appliance now continuously finds new data as it is added to networks, instead of performing that task at set intervals.

The bright yellow search device is designed to fit into the same racks that house networking equipment and computer servers uses similar technology to Google's search engine.

The original version of Google's search kit is being used by several hundred customers, Google claims. The company wants to increase demand for the search kit by offering a more powerful product and making it simpler to run. Google generated revenue of $962 million via its intranet business last year.

Google is currently in the midst of organising an initial public offering of stock and recently launched its new free email service, Gmail, as a beta testing version. The company generates the vast majority of its revenue from advertising links displayed alongside search results.
