Tokyo pair arrested over illegal data leak
1 June 2004
Two men were arrested in Tokyo on Sunday in connection with a massive leakage of client data from internet service provider Softbank BB Corp.
The two unemployed Tokyo men had allegedly threatened to leak the private information of customers of Yahoo BB broadband Internet service provider.
Yutaka Tomiyasu, 24, and Takuya Mori, 35, were arrested on charges of attempted extortion in connection with the leakage of data on about 4.6 million subscribers to the company's internet connection service Yahoo! BB.
Police said the two men were acquainted as hackers and were believed to have gone to a Shinjuku-ku Internet cafe in January armed with passwords and ID numbers given to them by a temporary worker at Softbank.
The men allegedly used the codes to break into the Yahoo BB database; stealing personal details of about 4.6 million people registered with Yahoo BB, and copying them on a CD and DVD.
Mori is accused of handing the data over to his father-in-law, Hiroshi Mori, 67, a political organisation leader. Mr Mori and 62-year-old Yahoo BB agency boss Teruaki Yuasa are also standing trial for attempting to extort the online service provider.
