Yahoo launches anti-spyware software
27 May 2004
Internet giant Yahoo has unveiled a new feature for its web browser toolbar.
The new anti-spyware software aims to make it easier for web users to remove unwanted "spyware" programs or malicious programs that snoop on web surfing habits and other activities.
Anti-Spy for the Yahoo! Toolbar is being released as a beta version to a select number of people at Beta.toolbar.yahoo.com. The spyware technology has been supplied by anti-spyware company PestPatrol.
Yahoo spokeswoman Stephanie Iwamasa said: "The toolbar is the best place to present this application because of its accessibility--you can log on and use your toolbar from any machine--and because it's a persistent application in the browser window."
The decision by yahoo to launch the software is a response to increasing concern about unwanted spyware, which downloads onto personal computers and often monitors web surfing habits. Spyware can also cause advertising displays to pop up unexpectedly and redirect users to a particular home page.
