Yahoo unveils world's first 'reality advertising IM contest'

Global internet firm Yahoo! Inc has launched a groundbreaking advertising campaign to accompany its updated Yahoo! Messenger service.

The Yahoo! Messenger Live IM promotion is the first 'reality advertising' internet marketing campaign.

Visitors to Yahoo! will be able to watch and vote through banner ads and a special microsite, as seven pairs of finalists compete to "win the hearts and minds of voters across America".

The contestants have been selected from thousands of people nationwide. Each pair will have their IM conversations broadcast live, via internet advertisements, and people who have downloaded the all-new Yahoo! Messenger will be able to vote for their favourite pair.

Each night, the pair with the lowest number of votes will be eliminated and the last pair standing will win a week-long trip to Hawaii. Voters will be eligible to win a trip to Hawaii to hang out with the winning pair.

The promotion runs from June 1st to June 8th, with competing pairs instant messaging from 8 - 11 pm EDT, every night (except Friday and Saturday). The winners will be announced on June 11th.

The new Yahoo! Messenger gives consumers a more personal and interactive instant messaging experience by offering leading Yahoo! services direct to the messaging window.
