Gmail site offers account swaps
20 May 2004
A new site has been launched allowing users to swap goods and services for Gmail accounts.
The site - GmailSwap.com - allows web users to post swaps in exchange for invitations for Gmail accounts. Current swaps on offer include a bottle of Jameson, some Jewish mystical knowledge, Paris Hilton's phone number, a pet monkey, a '70s-era gold couch, a vote in the US elections in November and up to $60 in cash.
Each offer posted on the swap site comes with links so that both parties can work out the details. GmailSwap.com is in no way affiliated with Google.
GmailSwap explains the reasons behind creating the site, stating: "By the time the gates open to the public, you - the web-savvy A-list indie-rock-listening cool kid - might be left with nothing but the lamest of addresses. And trust me, you don't want to be ws_alist_IRL_ck21@gmail.com."
Gmail is the new free email service from Google and is currently in its beta testing stage. It allows users to store up to 1 gigabyte of emails and attachments in their accounts. However, the service has raised concerns abiut privacy issues as it automatically searches members' e-mails for keywords and then adds targeted advertisements to messages.
Since announcing plans for the service, Google has already received more than a million requests for accounts, a company spokesman said. People have already been buying up accounts via auction website ebay, some for more than $100.
