US government agencies launch Science.gov 2.0
13 May 2004
FirstGov has launched an updated version of its science-related search engine Science.gov.
The site provides a gateway to selected science information provided by US government agencies in the form of websites and databases. It allows users to search 30 government databases and 1,700 Web sites.
Science.gov Version 2.0 offers improved relevancy, user-friendly enhancements and an advanced interface. The upgraded programme utilises federated search technology called Explorit, designed by Deep Web Technologies, and will now search 47 million pages of government research and development information.
"These agencies together have combined innovative technology, forward thinking and hard work to build an invaluable science resource," energy secretary Spencer Abraham said in a statement.
"From the most current information on new technologies, to historical research results, to the most promising medical advancements, Science.gov connects citizens to the world of science."
Science.gov was developed by an interagency working group of 17 scientific and technical information organizations from 12 major science agencies. The information resources content was contributed by various agencies participating in this project.
