Scirus provides search results for scientists
11 May 2004
Scientists now have a comprehensive search site for specific queries in their field.
Scirus is the most comprehensive science-specific search engine on the internet, searching over 167 million science-specific webpages.
The search engine allows users to quickly pinpoint scientific, scholarly, technical and medical data on the web, find the latest reports and look at peer-reviewed articles and journals that other search engines miss, including access-controlled sites.
The service also scans unpublished research, university websites, corporate Internet sites, conference agendas and minutes, discussion groups and mailing-list archives.
Scirus has proved so successful at locating science-specific results on the Web that the Search Engine Watch Awards voted it the Best Specialty Search Engine in 2001 and 2002.
The website returns results from the whole web and currently covers over 58 million .edu sites, 18 million .org sites, almost seven million .ac.uk sites, 18.6 million .com sites, 5 million .gov sites and over 45 million other relevant STM and University sites from around the world. Journal sources covered by Scirus searches include ScienceDirect, the USPTO, BioMed Central, NASA technical reports, the Mathematics Preprint Server and the Chemistry Preprint Server.
"What (our users) like is it really focuses searches on science websites, which means they have to deal with less nonsense on the web, and it really reduces the time that they have to spend searching," said Ammy Vogtlander, product manager for Scirus in Amsterdam. "Another thing they really like is the number of very high-quality sources. We make sure those sources (are) ranked properly."
