Google starts work on Bangalore research facility

An official has reportedly revealed that internet search company Google is working towards starting operations at its research centre in Bangalore soon.
The search giant is setting up an engineering research and development centre in the Indian technology capital and is also setting up a customer support centre in Hyderabad. The Bangalore centre will undertake projects in data mining, data warehousing, business intelligence and knowledge management.
Director of Bangalore-based Software Technology Parks of India (STPI), BV Naidu told IANS that approval for the Google centre was granted recently and the company had started the hiring process for engineers.
"The approvals for setting up the centre was given a fortnight ago and Google has already started recruiting people to get cracking. It is investing around $3 million to $4 million initially in the centre," he said.
Google has registered with the STPI to locate its centre in the technology park, which provides satellite-linked data services to IT firms and incubates start-ups.
The Bangalore centre marks Google's first fully-fledged engineering facility outside the US, The development team in Bangalore will reportedly work on problems in a number of areas, including information retrieval, a variety of novel search features, and scalability issues, as well as India specific technologies and products. Google also has R&D centres in Mountain View and Santa Monica, California, and New York.
