Google wins Froogle clash
22 April 2004
Google has won a battle for ownership of the domain name Froogle.
The search giant launched legal action after it discovered the domain name had been registered just one day after it launched Froogle as its product search service.
e-commerce solutions provider LWD snapped up the name Froogle.co.uk immediately after Google launched its service on December 11th last year and Google was informed of the registration when it came to register the domain name itself just two days later.
Google already owned froogle.com, froogle.org and other names, but wanted control of the .co.uk name and brought in lawyers. Negotiations for a settlement broke down and Google took its case to Nominet, the registry for all domain names ending .uk, alleging that LWD had attempted to charge the search engine £10,000.
Nominet rejected a claim by LWD that the "timing of our domain registration and the launch of froogle.com was entirely coincidental".
Nominet panellist Keith Gymer concluded that LWD did register the name with some "speculative intent" and it should be it transferred to Google.
