Microsoft personalises new search engine
20 April 2004
Microsoft's new search engine, Newsbot, is still in development, but the IT giant has announced that it has added personalised features to the service.
Newsbot, expected to launch fully later this year, will now give users a view of their own past searches, of past stories they've read and of stories popular with other users.
The Newsbot enhancements were announced just after online retailer Amazon.com launched its own search engine, A9.com, which features a search history.
Newsbot was launched overseas in beta format last November and already featured personalised layout of its news headlines. However, as part of the changes to the service, users will now receive personalisation and the new user history without logging in.
Newsbot now features a service entitled "The Daily We" that lists stories popular with other users and is updated every 20 minutes, similar to Google News. Users can also access a Your History link, which displays a list of search terms they have most recently used and clicking on a given search term brings up a list of linked stories on the subject. The list is updated instantly as new stories are published. Users no longer interested in a subject can delete it from the list or dump the entire list.
Microsoft insists that the cookies used to store the history data cannot be linked to individuals.
Newsbot is in partnership with Moreover news syndication services to gather news from over 4,000 sources. The new search engine has international versions throughout Europe, Asia and Latin America.
