Broadband boom helps Internet grow
5 October 2004
With ever more people signing on to high-speed internet packages the internet is growing by about one million new websites every month.
Network security company Netcraft has shown that five million websites have been created in the last five months - with the added convenience of broadband fuelling the growth in sites and demand for content.
Netcraft's data suggests there are now at least five million active sites on the web as users are finding it easier to create their own sites.
It also found that Apache has remained the most used web server, with more than 700,000 sites coming online on it in the last month.
Apache has been the leader since November 2003, adding 7.3 million sites to its name in that time, compared with just 2.2 million by Microsoft.
