BT seeks to appease regulator
23 September 2004
The UK's largest telecommunications company is attempting to avoid the wrath of regulator Ofcom, reports the Financial Times.
BT has announced that it is creating a new position within the company which will have responsibility for tidying up its regulatory processes.
Peter McCarthy-Ward has been appointed to the role of “director of equivalence”, as BT looks to ensure its sprawling network and various arms all fit into the regulator's requirements.
Ofcom is currently reviewing the regulatory framework of Britain's telecommunications market and is believed to be considering breaking up the former state-owned monopoly.
Since privatisation, many rivals of BT have alleged that BT Retail is given preferential treatment by BT Wholesale.
Although BT has always strenuously denied such accusations, repeated calls from its competitors seem to finally be making headway with the watchdog.
An insider from a rival company told the Financial Times: “This is a positive move in that BT is putting effort into equivalency.”
