Broadband yields online TV
21 September 2004
Britain's top telecommunications provider is set to make the most of new high-speed broadband technology to offer customers television online.
BT is already in talks with the BBC, ITV and BSkyB over the possibility of providing a pay-TV service over the Internet.
The current clamour from television consumers to obtain the new Freeview digital package has prompted the telecoms giant to look into combining the digital box with broadband Internet services.
Programmes such as Coronation Street and EastEnders would be available through the service and BT is thought to be considering "time-shifted" television, so that busy customers can watch their favourite programmes when they want.
The company is also looking at supplying on-demand television, which would see a large back-catalogue of films and television classics such as Fawlty Towers transmitted over high-speed broadband Internet services.
BT suggests a full commercial service could begin as soon as summer 2005.
The plans have emerged following recent statistics showing that penetration of digital television is increasing in the UK and that broadband connections are now higher than those through dial-up.
