"Silver surfers" embrace broadband
28 July 2004
One in three Internet users over the age of 45 have broadband, according to a survey by web portal "50 Connect".
The over-45s, often dubbed "silver surfers", were found to be amongst the first group to adopt new technology.
From a sample of 1,000 members of "50 Connect" more than a third (36 per cent) of the 45-60-year-old bracket already have broadband.
Julia Green, "50 Connect" sales director, commented: "The over-50s have higher disposable income than any other age group, so they're more likely to be able to afford broadband packages.
"And traditionally, the over-50s spend longer online so the benefits of broadband are perhaps more obvious to this age group."
The survey also discovered that the number of over-50s online has doubled since May 2003.
