Verizon planning new Internet phone service
22 July 2004
Verizon Communications, the largest telephone company in the US, is set to announce today a proposal to introduce Internet-based phone service to customers across the country, according to reports in the New York Times.
Should the plans go ahead Verizon will become the largest company to offer the technology, which is said to disect voice calls into packets of data and sends them over high-speed Internet lines.
The service has a number of benefits and has proven to be significantly cheaper than traditional phone calls, which has created a surge in interest in the technology in recent times.
In the last year alone, the service has been introduced by several phone companies and a number of cable providers and start-up companies.
The prices for Verizon's service are planned to be on a par with those offered by AT&T, Vonage and other providers.
Verizon is hopeful that by offering Internet calling, it will lure additional customers to sign up for its broadband service, an executive is reported as stating.
Verizon and SBC Communications have both announced plans to build high-speed fiber optic networks that connect directly to consumers' homes over the next several years.
