IPv6 signals onset of unlimited web domains
21 July 2004
The Internet Corporaation for Assigned Names and Numbers has launched new technology that it says will accommodate an unlimited number of Internet websites to be registered.
The next generation IPv6 protocol has been added to ICANN's root server systems, effectively making it possible for every individual or device to have a distinct Internet protocol address.
Concerns have grown that the existing IPv4 system may not be able to accommodate demand for more domains, with many worried over the future scarcity of domain addresses.;
"This is a big, big step," stated ICANN chairman Vincent Cerf, at ICANN's annual conference in Malaysia. He continued to state that to date, some two-thirds of the 4.3 billion Internet addresses currently available are accounted for, adding that IPv6 could magnify capacity by some "25,000 trillion trillion times".
The IPv6 system would run parallel to IPv4 for about 20 years to ensure that any bugs or system errors were negated before full, solo implementation.
