Icann looks to standardise Internet alphabet
19 July 2004
The Internet Company for Assigned Names and Numbers (Icann), is holding a meeting in Malaysia aimed at helping web users who do not use the Western alphabet.
The group, which oversees the system of web addresses and domain names on the Internet is keen to harmonise the alpha bet due to the burgeoning Asian market.
The group claims that of the over 100 million people around the world who currently have high-speed broadband connections, nearly half of them are in Asia.
Current regulations, whilst largely similar in Western countries, can vary, and can cause serious problems for users when typing web addresses, due to the need for precision in this respect.
Icann has revealed that the work being carried out at the conference will focus on agreements on standards for languages and the characters in which they are written and will allow top-level domain names like "dot com and "dot org" to be developed in other languages.
