BT and Yahoo launches VoIP service
15 July 2004
Telecoms operator BT and search engine giant Yahoo have announced plans to launch a messaging service.
The new offering will allow users to exchange voice messages over the Internet.
Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is one of the most talked about technological developments in the telecoms sector.
Enabling users to make voice calls on the web will be good news for the consumer as it provides a cheaper means of communicating, but it could be bad news for the fixed line operators.
BT is hoping to limit the impact by getting in on the action.
Reports suggest the two firms will launch an upgrade featuring video functionality next year.
