Power lines to drive broadband
15 July 2004
Electric power lines will enable broadband access to become truly universal, according to the chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
Michael Powell made the comments on Wednesday at a demonstration of the broadband over power line (BPL) technology, which is currently being developed by AT&T.
The trial used existing power lines to transmit digital packets carrying high-speed Internet services, allowing customers to access the Internet, send email, download video and make phone calls.
AT&T's chief technology officer and chief information officer Hossein Eslambolchi confirmed that the US-based telecoms firm hopes to make the technology generally available in three to five years.
"This is something we want to see happen," Mr Powell stated.
He added the BPL technology makes it "theoretically possible to reach every power outlet in America with a broadband connection".
