UK joins international spam effort

The UK has joined the US and Australian authorities in signing up to a new international agreement designed to tackle the curse of spam on the Internet.

The memorandum of understanding (MoU), signed in Washington yesterday, will see cross border co-operation between the Australian Communications Authority (ACA) and the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) the US Federal Trade Commission, and the UK Department of Trade and Industry, the UK Information Commissioner and the UK Office of Fair Trading.

Acting chairman of the ACA Dr Bob Horton said to znet.co.uk that the agreement would provide a framework for cross-boarder cooperation on the issue.

"The signing of the MoU will allow us to exchange best practice and policy ideas as well as conduct joint investigations into serious spam violations," he said.

Dr Horton added that whilst the MoU would not provide a silver bullet to eradicate the international spam problem, it would support anti-spam efforts and facillitate "the continued development of e-business and e-communications while combating cross-border fraud."

Dr Horton said he was hopeful that the signing would be built upon at the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) conference on global spam legislation, awareness and collaborative action, to be held in Geneva later this month.
